About - Presidents's Message

As we embark upon a new season it is apparent the “winds of change" are in the air. Recent adjustments to the Canadian Not-for-profit Corporations Act have necessitated that Hockey Canada set a critical path for a complete review of their governance structure in order to meet an October 2014 deadline for compliance. It is hoped that the byproduct of this restructuring will include the clarification of roles and responsibilities for the Board, the refocusing of committees and improved communication.

This administrative change at the national level will no doubt have an effect on our structure as well. BC Hockey excels in many areas; from Initiation to Senior Hockey, our on ice accomplishments leave us with a great sense of pride. Nationally we are recognized as leaders with our on-ice programs and in the use of technology, yet we are functioning with a governance structure which dates back several decades. To this end we have initiated a complete and thorough review of our current governance structure to ensure that it is able to effectively meet the needs of our modern-day members.

A governance review of this nature is a significant undertaking and will not be accomplished over night. We realize that change for most can be uncomfortable, however much of this trepidation can be minimized if the resulting outcome of this review is a streamlined governance structure which is able to adjust to today’s fast paced environment. Regardless of the outcome, the thousands of volunteers that fuel our efforts will continue to be the cornerstone of our organization.

Have a great season.

Wilf Liefke, BC Hockey President
