The 2007 BC Hockey Summit produced “Cooperate with the School System to introduce hockey to all students in BC” as one of the most important growth initiative for BC Hockey. One strong recommendation from the Summit groups was; “BC Hockey to become involved in BC School Sports/ High School hockey”
To grow the game of ice hockey by providing a province wide High School league that is separate of the existing Minor Hockey season but which compliments and benefits both the High School and Minor Hockey systems in British Columbia.
It is with great pleasure to announce a chance to represent your school in the first ever British Columbia High School Hockey League.

BC Hockey is committed to being the best at doing the most for all students to experience life’s learning outcomes through a hockey component that complements the Ministry of Education, Health and Education Curriculum. It is through this commitment that BC Hockey has developed a curriculum that can be introduced into classrooms throughout the country. The curriculum encourages participation in and appreciation of Canada’s national game while promoting healthy living.
The following resources have been prepared by BC Hockey to assist schools in the implementation of the BC Hockey In Our Schools program. BC Hockey through the BC Sports Participation Program supplies these resources free of charge in hope that this type of programming is made available to all students in BC.
It is the intention of BC Hockey to continue to update these resources based on feedback received from schools, teachers and hockey organizations in the province.
Two of the documents, the On-Ice Operations and Curriculum and the Gym Based manual, require users to “sign-in” prior to access. This process was developed in order to track users or potential users of the program. Our purpose is to: 1) Actively assist those with interest in the program as well as to keep them informed as materials and opportunities become available and 2) to track statistical data on programs being conducted.
BC Hockey wishes you success with the implementation of the BC Hockey In Our Schools program. Hockey has an impressive background in our province and we believe hockey would be a welcome addition to any school curriculum!

1) Orientation Presentation
This power point presentation is designed as an introduction of the program to interested parties that may include: school administrators, teachers, parent groups, and local hockey associations. The program background and foundational information contained in the presentation will be valuable as an introduction. It allows the user the ability to add specific information on the program being discussed in their community.
The presentation is offered in two formats:
2) Program Brochure
This brochure was produced as a possible meeting handout or a resource that students could take into the home. It simply describes the initiative of the program and the fit to the school curriculum.
3) District Liaison Job Description
One of the aspects of program development was to create a network of individuals that would be prepared to offer assistance to local program development. These individuals have been trained in aspects of the program, are familiar with the school system, and may have conducted the program in their school / community. This brief job description is supplied to explain the role of these individuals. Should you require assistance from a BC Hockey District Liaison simply email info@bchockey.net. Include your contacts, the type of assistance required as well as information on your school. We will return the specific contact information to you.
4) On-Ice Introductory Video
This 9 minute presentation based on schools participating in the on-ice program was compiled by the students and teachers of Isabella Dicken Elementary School in Fernie BC. It is an excellent source of visual information on the experience that can be associated with the program.

5) BC Hockey In Our Schools On-Ice Curriculum and Operations Manual
The Operations manual is over 100 pages of instruction on how to conduct the on-ice BC Hockey In Our Schools Program. Users can download the entire document or sections of interest.
The program involves six on-ice sessions formatted into a teaching unit. The suggestion is that these sessions each be 45 minutes of on-ice activity. A unit could easily be done once a week for six weeks or using two or three ice sessions per week.
There are three levels of curriculum developed:
- Level 1 Primary – Kindergarten to Grade 3
- Level 2 Intermediate – Grade 3 to Grade 7/8
- Level 3 Secondary – Grade 8/9 to Grade 12
Each on-ice session is easily adaptable to the various hockey skill levels of the students by breaking the ice into stations. Our pilots were successful with up to 70 students on the ice at one time in Level 1 – Primary.
6) BC Hockey In Our Schools Gym Based Manual
This complete Operations manual outlines the process and curriculum for a success gym-based hockey program. Recognizing that on-ice experiences are not available to all BC students it is our hope that this simple gym based hockey curriculum for grades K–8 will reach all students in BC. It may be combined with the on-ice curriculum for a complete hockey experience OR be offered on its own. It is designed for ease of understanding and implementation. The program can be offered by any teacher. It is written so little or no hockey experience is required! The program unit consists of 10 gym sessions with another 3 optional sessions for consideration.
