2011 Skills Summit a Great Success
Thursday, November 17, 2011
BC Hockey held a successful Skills Summit in Langley, BC from November 11-13, 2011 at the Langley Events Centre and Langley Sportsplex. The Summit was held in conjunction with the 2011 World Junior A Challenge. Twenty-five (25) delegates attended the three (3) day coaching seminar to learn key skills that are relevant in today’s game.
The Skills Summit was facilitated by Aaron Hoffman (BC Hockey Mentorship Coordinator), and the following guest speakers:
Craig Sherbaty - Coach Coordinator, Surrey Minor Hockey
Pasco Valana - Goaltender Coach, Langley Rivermen
Jessie Leung – Assistant Coach, Valley West Hawks
A highlight of the Summit included speaker Bill Muckalt, a six (6) year NHL veteran and current assistant coach for the Michigan Tech Huskies, who spoke to the delegates about short term tournament preparation and discussed the various aspects of being an NCAA scout.
The on-ice sessions focused on skating, goaltending techniques and small area games, which was supplemented with off-ice sessions that included cutting edge coaching technology to train the delegates in each specific skill. During the Summit, the delegates took in the bronze medal game of the 2011 World Junior A Challenge.
The summit was based on material in the National Coach Mentorship Program (NCMP) and information from Hockey Canada. The specific skills taught during the summit included:
Creating Offense
Developing Defensemen
Puck Control/Skating
Creating thinking/Small Area Games
Delegates will now receive coach credits that will be recorded on their Hockey Canada Registry (HCR) portfolio.
