Youth Programs - Lace 'Em Up

LACE ‘EM UP” is a program developed by BC Hockey that is designed to encourage registration in local minor hockey associations by focusing on the new or first-time participant. These participants are exposed to the game in a non-threatening and enjoyable environment.

The focus is on children in the six to twelve year age span who have little or no experience in hockey. Their experience in the “LACE ‘EM UP” program includes both on and off-ice activities designed to introduce the fundamental individual skills of the game along with the benefits of being part of a team.

The new participants will benefit by being introduced to a sport they can play throughout their lives, no matter what their level. Their fitness and overall health will improve with increased physical activity. They will discover the benefits of participating in a team environment and will develop social skills that they can carry forward to other areas of their lives.  Most importantly though, they will have fun!

The “LACE ‘EM UP” program is an initiative of BC Hockey and our members, and is financially supported through the BC Sport Participation Program, with contributions from the Government of Canada, the Province of British Columbia, 2010 Legacies Now, and the Bilateral Funding Program.

“LACE ‘EM UP” and Minor Hockey Associations

Local minor hockey associations play an important role in the success of the program by assisting in the recruitment of prospective participants and by providing all the information needed to become a member of their association.  BC Hockey provides both financial and material support for the program.  Staff for the event comes from the local association with BC Hockey support depending on the needs of each individual event.

The benefits of the program are numerous.  Increased registration at the local level strengthens every association’s ability to provide programs for their members.  New registrants mean a new crop of volunteers to help run the programs and take pressure off an already overworked group of people.  New faces mean new ideas and the energy to carry them out.  Arenas and recreation centres benefit by introducing and showcasing their facilities to an even greater segment of their communities.
