The selection camp will take place October 28-31, 2012 at Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary, Alberta. The 60 players will be divided into three (3) teams – Red, White and Blue – and will play three (3) intrasquad games, in addition to daily practices.
Players named to the Canada West selection camp roster were selected from the CJHL’s five (5) western Junior A leagues: the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL), Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL), Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) and Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL)>
The selection camp roster was selected by Canada West head coach Dean Brockman (St. Benedict, Saskatchewan), along with assistant coaches Jason McKee (Irma, Alberta) and Ryan Smith (Headingley, Manitoba).
“With the talent on the ice in Canada’s five (5) western Junior A leagues this season, it was no easy feat to get down to 60 players,” said Brockman. “We’re excited to get on the ice in Calgary to choose the 22 players who will wear the red and white and represent the west in Yarmouth.”
“These players represent some of the best prospects in the entire game, not just Junior A,” said CJHL president Kirk Lamb. “Canada West has enjoyed tremendous success at the World Junior A Challenge and we are very confident these selections will allow Canada West to be very competitive in Yarmouth.”
The Canada West selection camp roster includes:
· Six (6) goaltenders, 18 defencemen and 36 forwards
· 23 players from the BCHL, 20 players from the AJHL, seven (7) players from the SJHL, four (4) players from the MJHL and three (3) players from the SIJHL
· Seven (7) players returning from the 2011 World Junior A Challenge (Hadley, Hoekstra, Kerfoot, Morley, Richardson, Stecher, Stenerson)
· Three (3) players selected in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft (Kerfoot – New Jersey, 150th overall; de Haas – Detroit, 170th overall, Tomkins – Chicago, 199th overall)
The 2012 World Junior A Challenge will be held November 5-11, 2012 at the Mariners Centre in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Canada West will play in Group A with the Czech Republic and Russia, while Canada East, Switzerland and the United States will comprise Group B. Preliminary round play will run until Wednesday, November 7, 2012, with both semi-finals taking place on Friday, November 9, 2012. The gold medal game, which will be shown nationally on TSN/RDS, the official broadcasters of Hockey Canada, is set for Sunday, November 11, 2012 (check your local listings). All preliminary round games, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the bronze medal game can be watched live via webcast through FASTHockey at hockeycanada.fasthockey.com.
