Team BC fell to host province Alberta 6-3 in their opening game of the 2015 Western Canada Challenge Cup in Calgary.
BC led 2-1 after the first period thanks to goals from Liam Kindree (assists by Ethan Cap and Eli Zummack). Luka Burzan also nabbed a short-handed goal. Alberta’s only goal of the first period came from Josh Tarzwell.
BC opened the scoring in the second period, with Tyler Popowich scoring off assists from Cap and Kabir Gill. However, it was all Alberta from that point on, as they scored five (5) unanswered goals in the last two (2) periods to take the 6-3 win. Josh Prokup (2), Nicholas Bowman (2), and Chase Wouters scored for Alberta.
Both teams struggled on the power play, with BC going zero (0) for five (5) and Alberta scoring on just one (1) of their eight (8) chances.
In net, Jordan Naylor played just over 51 minutes, allowing six (6) goals on 28 shots. Donovan Buskey played the last nine (9) minutes of the game and made two (2) saves. Alberta’s Carl Stankowski allowed three (3) goals on 19 shots in the win. Team BC was outshot by Alberta 36-22.
Team BC takes on Manitoba at 6:00PM Pacific Time on Thursday, October 29, 2015. They will then play their third and final round robin game against Saskatchewan at 2:00PM PT on October 30, 2015, before moving onto the medal round over the weekend. Follow along on Twitter at @BCHockey_MU16BC

The Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup will feature the highest-rated players in the U16 age category from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The tournament will be a four (4) team round robin format and is the first step in Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence for players. Additionally, the event assists the four (4) provincial hockey associations in evaluating top prospects for future high performance programs.
Many National Hockey League (NHL) and Western Hockey League (WHL) players have played at the Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup for Team BC, including: Griffin Reinhart (West Vancouver, Edmonton Oilers), Morgan Reilly (West Vancouver, Toronto Maple Leafs), Jake Virtanen (Abbotsford, Vancouver Canucks), Mathew Barzal (Coquitlam, Seattle Thunderbirds) and Jansen Harkins (North Vancouver, Prince George Cougars).
