Female U16 ID Camp Day One Re-cap
Saturday, April 08, 2017

The first day of camp in the books and the second day getting ready to wrap up; the teams were prepared to finish of day 2 strong with a pair of games to close out the night at The Shaw Centre in Salmon Arm.

The first game of the evening had the Monarchs facing off against the Waves. The Waves came out of the gates strong controlling the play, firing 13 shots on goaltender Bella Heng (Coquitlam). The Waves got on the board first when Emma Elders (Vernon) stripped the puck from the defender and set up Ashley Morrow (Delta, BC) who buried a shot into the top corner. The Monarchs pushed back in the second period, but were  unable to get any pucks past the Waves goaltending. Mid-way through the period, the Waves extended their lead when Natalie Knight (Kamloops) broke in off the rush and beat the goalie high over the stick side. The third period started strong for the Monarchs as they pushed to get back into the game. They finally broke at the through 12:23 mark  when Jennifer Andrash (Richmond) got in behind the defence and made a nice deke and firing the puck home, to cut the score to 2-1. As the clocked ticked down, the Monarchs kept the pressure on, but Lauren Hunt (Kelowna) stood tall in the Waves net and shut the door. The Waves will look to win two in a row on Saturday when they face the Lightning at 5:30pm. The Monarchs are looking to bounce back against the Hawks when they meet at 7:45pm.

The matchup was set for game two (2) between the Hawks and Lightning. The first period was evenly contested with the shots being even, however the Lightning struck first when Desiree Weins (Abbotsford) made a nice move at the blue line and got in alone burying it pas the goaltender. The Lightning carried that momentum into the second period, as they took a 2-0 lead early on when Lauryn Lee (Vancouver, BC) set up Isabelle Oestreich (Whitehorse) and she tapped it through the five-hole. The Lightning kept the pressure on throughout the period, the extended the lead to 3-0 as Lyndsy Acheson (Summerland) let go with a blast from the point and Desiree Weins was there to pop in the rebound for her second goal of the game. The Hawks did not go down without a fight and pushed back in the third. At the 8:28 mark of the third period Camryn Filimek (Kamloops) fired a shot from the point and Brette Kerley (Williams Lake) broke free in front and banged home the rebound, narrowing the lead to 3-1. The pace picked up as the teams traded scoring chances, but the Hawks moved within one as Savannah Menzies (Grand Forks) drew a penalty shot and was able to capitalize, beating the goalie over the shoulder. Only 38 seconds later, the Lightning restored their 2 goal lead as Katie Chan (Richmond) potted in a rebound. That goal did not stop the pressure, the Hawks kept pushing and got within one goal again as Kate Klassen (Abbotsford) set up Sarah Paul (West Kelowna) joining the rush and she slid the puck home with just over a minute left. Unfortunately for the Hawks, that is as close as they would come and the Lightning held on for a 4-3 victory.
