Special Programs
BC High School Hockey League

Background
The 2007 BC Hockey Summit produced “Cooperate with the School System to introduce hockey to all students in BC” as one of the most important growth initiative for BC Hockey. One strong recommendation from the Summit groups was; “BC Hockey to become involved in BC School Sports/ High School hockey”

Vision
To grow the game of ice hockey by providing a province wide High School league that is separate of the existing Minor Hockey season but which compliments and benefits both the High School and Minor Hockey systems in British Columbia.

Purpose
  • To act as a platform for all high schools to develop and maintain hockey programs within their athletic departments.
  • To allow schools to compete against one another in an organized league. Future opportunities lead to the declaration of BC Champions.
  • To provide the players with a new experience that is unique from what they would receive through minor hockey with minimal interference with existing BC Hockey programming.
  • To assist the development of BC athletes.
  • To provide post-season options for BC Hockey players.

Introduction

It is with great pleasure to announce a chance to represent your school in the first ever British Columbia High School Hockey League.

INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING?
In March 2010, 16 high schools in four zones will compete for a chance to win the BC High School Hockey League Championship in a fun but highly competitive league. In this inaugural year, we will be accepting applications from the following areas:
  • Langley
  • Abbotsford
  • Tri Cities
  • Ridge Meadows

Each school / team will first compete against three other high schools from their area in a round robin format. Once the round robin is complete the teams will be ranked 1-4 based on points, and all 16 teams will move to the Tournament of Champions. Here the teams will play in a single game knock out system until a champion is declared and crowned the best high school hockey team in the BC High School Hockey League.

When putting a team together, all players must fit into all three categories listed below:
  1. Players are enrolled full time in the school that they play for.
  2. Players are in grades 10-12, or basically a Midget-aged hockey player.
  3. Players are a registered BC Hockey Player (Junior Hockey players are excluded)
A minimum of one coach must be a faculty member of that school and must be at each game.

WHEN WILL THIS HAPPEN?
The schedules will be handed out as the date approaches, but the ice has already been booked for each zone in March 2010. Teams will play one (1) game each week in the round robin, and the Tournament of Champions will be held April 1 to 4, 2010. All four teams in each area will play on the same night at the same rink in a back-to-back format. So show up early or stay late to study your future opponents or just to be a part of all the game day excitement!

WANT TO REGISTER YOUR SCHOOL / TEAM?
You have until February 7, 2010 to enter your team. We anticipate that spots will fill up quickly and teams will be accepted on a first come first served basis. Linked below is registration information that must be filled out with payment in full before your team is accepted. Additional information about the program will be supplied to team representatives once all the teams are set. You can also contact the league operator, Aaron Crawford, at 604-240-1408 to answer any questions.

Good luck to all teams!

Special Programs

Special Programs are those programs and projects that are:

1. Available on a limited basis such as those that may be tied to events like the World Junior Championships or Olympics.

2. Initiatives that are in various developmental stages as pilots that may eventually become standard BC Hockey program options. A good example is the Parent Education program that is in developmental stages in cooperation with Hockey Canada. It is hoped that this type of program will eventually be standard fare for BC Hockey members.

3. Projects dependant on cooperative alliances formed with other organizations. One example is the BC Hockey in Our Schools program that is dependent on relations with BC Schools. Here BC Hockey is the technical resource for school based instruction in our sport.
