BC Hockey’s Male Under 17 Provincial Development camp concluded today with Team Canucks capturing the Ted Hargreaves Memorial Cup. The camp was held in Nanaimo at the Nanaimo Ice Centre from July 27 to August 1.
Game one (1) got underway Thursday evening in front of a packed crowd at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. The Canucks jumped out to a fast start scoring two (2) early first period goals. Before the period was over the Leafs cut the lead to one (1). The Canucks opened the scoring again in the second period and went on to win the game 5-3. The Canuck’s Brady Brassart (North Vancouver, BC) scored the winning goal and added one (1) assist.
The second game was played Friday afternoon. Again the Canucks jumped out to a fast start taking a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. The Leafs tied it up near the end of the second period, but it was all Canucks in the third frame going on to win the game 5-3. The Canuck’s Joe Kornelson (Abbotsford, BC) scored the winning goal with just under ten (10) minutes play.
The third and final game was played Saturday morning. After the first period of play it was 1-0 for the Canucks. The Leafs came out strong in the second period and scored an early period power play goal. The Canucks rebounded and scored two (2) consecutive goals to take a 3-1 lead into the third period. The Canucks continued their dominance into the third period scoring an early goal, but this was answered by the Leafs at the 11 minute mark. The Leafs could not close the gap further and this is how the game would end 4-2 for the Canucks to win the series 3-0.
The Male High Performance Evaluators will now narrow the 51 players to 21 players and those selected will be monitored and evaluated throughout the first half of the season. BC Hockey will announce the 21 players selected in the coming weeks. In mid-November the 11 players chosen to represent BC will be announced. The 11 players will join the top 11 players from Alberta to form Team Pacific.
Team Pacific will compete at the 2010 World Under 17 Hockey Challenge in Timmons, Ontario from December 29, 2009 to January 4, 2010.
