Penticton Vees Earn a Berth in RBC Cup
Monday, May 8, 2017

The Penticton Vees will head to the RBC Cup, Canada’s National Junior A Championship, for the third (3rd) time in six (6) seasons after securing the western region’s number two (2) berth.

The Vees were the host team of the Western Canada Cup (WCC) which sees teams from the four (4) western provinces; the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL), the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) and the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).

Penticton won the BCHL Championship defeating the Chilliwack Chiefs in seven (7) games and since Penticton was the host team, both teams would play in the WCC. Two (2) berths to the RBC Cup come from the WCC. The AJHL’s Brooks Bandits earned the first berth winning the WCC with a 6-1 win over Chilliwack.

The Chiefs would get a second chance at advancing, facing Penticton in the last game of the tournament for the second berth for the RBC Cup on Sunday. Penticton held on to a slim 3-2 victory over Chilliwack in front of an outstanding home crowd at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

The Vees will play in the RBC Cup being held May 13-21 in Cobourg, Ontario against regional champions from across the country. Penticton last played in the national championship in 2015, held in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. They won the national title in 2012 in Humboldt, Saskatchewan.  Click here for the RBC Cup website.

The Chiefs are hosting the 2018 RBC Cup in Chilliwack.
