BC Hockey announced that Steve Papp (Kelowna) has been selected as the Western Hockey League (WHL) referee representative for the 2017 MasterCard Memorial Cup in Windsor, Ontario, May 19-28, 2017.
Each of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) member leagues (WHL, OHL and QMJHL) send one (1) referee to the Memorial Cup Championship annually, with the host league providing an additional referee and the five (5) linesmen for the event. Papp will be the fourth consecutive BC Hockey referee to be selected as a WHL representative at the Memorial Cup and the eighth BC Hockey referee selected for the Memorial Cup since 2010. Previous BC Hockey referees assigned to the Memorial Cup include; Jeff Ingram (2016), Brett Iverson (2014, 2015), Pat Smith (2012, 2010) and Matt Kirk (2011, 2010).
Steve Papp has been a Hockey Canada certified Level VI (6) referee since 2009 and just completed his 13th WHL season. This season marked Papp’s fourth consecutive appearance in the Ed Chynoweth Cup, the WHL Championship Series (2014-2017). Some of Steve’s previous accomplishments include the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship in Malmo, Sweden, where he officiated the gold medal game between Sweden and Finland. He also officiated the 2013 IIHF Men’s U18 World Championship and two (2) World Junior A Challenge tournaments. Within the BC Hockey Program of Excellence, Papp has participated in the BC Cup, BC Winter Games and has attended both the Summer Officiating School and Officiating Program of Excellence (OPoE) as a student and instructor. Steve continues his involvement within the BC Hockey Officiating program by serving as an Above Minor Supervisor and Mentor at the Midget AAA and Junior B levels.
