BC Hockey is set to kick off the 2017-2018 hockey season by celebrating World Girls Hockey Weekend (WGHW) October 6 – 8, 2017. A number of events will be taking place around BC and the Yukon, including Esso Fun Days, the Long Game, tournaments, and other female hockey celebrations.
Minor Hockey Associations (MHA) are encouraged to register their WGHW events with Hockey Canada as part of the nationwide celebration. Participants of registered events will receive free toques courtesy of Hockey Canada. Events can range from games, tournaments, or practices to off-ice activities such as ball hockey games or dryland sessions. Activities for newcomers are also encouraged, such as Esso Fun Days, Try Hockey Days, “Bring A Friend” skates, or “Mom & Daughter Skates”.

BC Hockey and the Surrey Female Hockey Association are hosting an Esso Fun Day on Friday, October 6, 2017 6:45 PM at the Surrey Sport and Leisure Centre. The free event is designed to introduce hockey and its basic skills in a fun and supportive environment for females new to the game.

The Long Game, a coast-to-coast female hockey game, will be taking place on Saturday, October 7, 2017. The Long Game travels from Newfoundland and Labrador through every Branch (Hockey PEI, Hockey Nova Scotia, Hockey New Brunswick, Hockey Quebec, Hockey North, the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association, Hockey Manitoba, the Saskatchewan Hockey Association, and Hockey Alberta) before ending on the west coast. MHAs can apply to host the Atom, Pee Wee, Bantam, Midget, or Senior divisions of the game.

BC Hockey is also pleased to announce that Alexandra Yallouz has been named Female Development Coordinator. Yallouz, a native of North Vancouver, BC, played on Team BC at the 2009 National Women’s U18 Championship and also played varsity hockey for the Carleton University Ravens. Yallouz has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia and is currently completing her Masters of Arts in Communication and Leadership from Gonzaga University. She currently works for the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce.
