Major Bantam AAA League Coaches Announced
Wednesday, April 10, 2019

BC Hockey announced six (6) of the Major Bantam AAA League (MBL) head coaches for the 2019 – 2020 season.  The remaining coaches will be announced shortly.

The head coaches are:

Nathan Martz

Fraser Valley Thunderbirds

Adam Nugent-Hopkins

Greater Vancouver Canadians

Jason Beckett

Okanagan Rockets

Riley Emmerson

Valley West Giants

Tyson Mulock

Vancouver North West Hawks

Prior to joining the MBL, Martz (Chilliwack, BC) served as assistant coach for the Major Midget League (MML) Fraser Valley Thunderbirds, which included a league championship.  He also led the BC Hockey League (BCHL) Chilliwack Chiefs as assistant coach and head coach of the Chilliwack Bruins Bantam Tier 1 team.  Martz’s Junior playing career includes two (2) time BCHL finalist and Western Canada Junior A participant.

Nugent-Hopkins (Burnaby, BC) brings both hockey coach and strength performance coach experience to the Canadians.  Last season he led the Burnaby Junior A Islanders 2007’s and remains a dryland trainer for multiple minor hockey teams.  On the ice, Nugent-Hopkins played several years of Junior hockey before moving on to play for Concordia University of U Sports.

Last season, Beckett (Kelowna, BC) was the associate coach of the Minor Midget League (MML15) Rockets, while operating Perfect Skating Kelowna as owner and lead instructor.  He also has spent several years working with the Pursuit of Excellence and BC Hockey at various hockey camps.  As a player, Beckett was named Western Hockey League (WHL) Scholastic Player of the Year and Best Defensemen while with the Seattle Thunderbirds.

Emmerson (Abbotsford, BC) joins the Giants after years of coaching at the Langley and Abbotsford Minor Hockey Associations (MHA), first as associate coach of the Langley Bantam Tier 1 team, then as head coach of the Abbotsford Bantam Tier 1 squad.  As a player, Emmerson spent over 10 professional seasons with various teams across numerous leagues.

Scigliano has been coaching minor hockey for over six (6) seasons at the Richmond MHA and Burnaby Winter Club (BWC).  This past season, he led the BWC Pee Wee Tier 2 squad to gold at the BC Hockey Championships.  As a player, Scigliano grew up playing with the Burnaby MHA before moving on to Junior B and the BC Intercollegiate League, where he played with Simon Fraser University and captured back-to-back league championships.

Before the Hawks, Mulock (Langley, BC) was the head coach of the North Shore Winter Club Bantam Elite team and a development coach within the club.  On the ice, he helped the Nanaimo Clippers to a Fred Page Cup, Junior A National Championship, and spent 12 years in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga in Germany, where he won five (5) championships.

The MBL is comprised of a 30-game season and features two (2) Showcase Weekends.  The schedule was built to have long weekend breaks and bye-weeks so players can participate in Major Bantam tournaments.  A MBL tournament will be hosted in Kelowna around the MML Showcase Weekend in the 2019 - 2020 season.
