Sheryl has volunteered with BC Hockey League (BCHL) and Juan de Fuca Minor Hockey Association (JDFMHA) for many years. She has always accepted positions above her normal team manager positions and continues to volunteer her time being an office manager with the BCHL Victoria Grizzlies.
With the JDFMHA Grizzlies, she manages her team and is the secretary of the Association. She attends evening meetings, schedules/manages tournaments, manages volunteers, sets up and attends fundraising functions, provides guidance to teams, coaches and players. She assisted with implementing and setting up the transition to electronic scoring sheets. She steps up when parents advise at the last minute, when they are not able to complete their time clock or score sheet duties and will assist with getting players to the ice when parents may be on time constraints or other issues. She sets up and coordinates the BCHL Grizzlies to be on the ice to provide guidance to JDFMHA players and creates opportunities for JDFMHA to play intermission mini games during the regular season. Sheryl also volunteered her time to be the manager for the 2018 JDFMHA International Hockey team to Europe.
With the BCHL Grizzlies, she is the office manager, team ticket agent coordinator, team school visit liaison, team public functions coordinator and billet coordinator. She also billets two (2) BCHL players preparing meals and associated duties, coordinating midseason billeting requirements, resolving host/player concerns and coordinating team functions. She organizes and plans special game events and presents ideas to increase ticket sales and community involvement (emergency services hockey games, alumni, military nights, etc.).
Sheryl goes beyond volunteering to ensure players, managers, coaches, and families are informed, prepared, and, most importantly, can enjoy themselves during the hockey season. Her hockey volunteering does not end when the season is over, though, as she needs to prepare for the upcoming season wit both JDFMHA and BCHL Grizzlies. Sheryl will also have her son understand the value of volunteering as he skates with the BCHL Grizzlies (flag) during home games, volunteers with rink duties during and between games, and will nominate school friends to assist during home games.
Sheryl does this as a single parent while her husband has been deployed with the military and while her husband is employed for extended work terms (years at a time). She also volunteers with her son's school as not only past Parent Advisory Council (PAC) president for many years, but the current hot lunch program coordinator ensuring no child goes hungry. Sheryl again ensures her son understands the value of volunteering by asking him to assist with the hot lunch program (early morning preparation and clean up). Sheryl is a pillar in her community excelling at bringing families, communities and sports together.
