WORLD GIRLS' ICE HOCKEY WEEKEND SET FOR OCTOBER - NOVEMBER 2024!

For Immediate Release

July 31, 2024

Saanichton, B.C. – BC Hockey, along with Hockey Canada, is proud to announce applications are now open for the International Ice Hockey Federation’s World Girls’ Ice Hockey Weekend (WGIHW) slated for October - November 2024.

World Girls' Ice Hockey Weekend is an international celebration of the women and girls' game that has reached hundreds of thousands of young girls over the last decade. The goal is to have events from coast-to-coast that recruit, retain and engage female players, coaches, officials and fans - old and new. It aims to celebrate and grow female hockey and bring teams together for events geared towards recruitment, celebration, visibility and retention. This year, Districts and Minor Hockey Associations (MHAs) have the opportunity to host these events either in October or November.

"This is a special event that we eagerly anticipate each year," said Brianna Davey, BC Hockey's Vice President, Member Services - Minor & Female. "It provides Districts and MHAs with the opportunity to promote girls' hockey in their communities. These moments not only strengthen our hockey community but also inspire the next generation of athletes and leaders."

Any Districts or Minor Hockey Associations interested in hosting an event have until September 1, 2024 to submit an application for their event HERE. Successful applicants will receive financial reimbursement from Hockey Canada to offset the costs associated with putting on the event.

In 2023, more than 6500 girls benefited from the WGIHW with the delivery of more than 55 events across the country. If you are looking for some inspiration or if you would like to go on a pictorial tour of the different events that have been held around the globe over the years, CLICK HERE.
